Neil Murray: August 2010

Hi Folks,

Neil Murray has been in the top end now for a couple of weeks and has been spotted floating around the markets in Parap and Nightcliff loading up on mango crepes, ricepaper rolls, pad thai, and the mandatory tropical fruit smoothies.

Last weekend saw him return to Kununurra-  heading up the Friday night of July 23rd at Hotel Kununurra. Neil’s advice to anyone planning to perform there is:  “to make sure you have “brown eyed girl” up your sleeve!” Van has a lot to answer for!
For those in the know- it was while staying overnight in a room at the Hotel Kununurra in 2006 that Neil penned the song “Drifting Ways” ( see the Overnighter album).

On Saturday July 24th he appeared with Peter Brandy at the Kimberly Writers Festival Concert. After performing separately they combined on stage for the songs “ Have you ever” and “My Island Home”
Neil concluded the weekend with a performance at the magic lakeside setting of the Pumphouse Restaurant on Sunday evening.
(Thanks to Scott and Emma for their generous help and assistance over the weekend).

The WITNESS tour continues this week into Darwin on July 30 & 31st  where Neil will perform in solo mode for 2 nights at the popular Groove Café in Nightcliff and  then on Sunday August 1st from 5pm with a band rocking the afternoon away at the Top End’s famous Humpty Doo Hotel.

Neil heads south next week playing Katherine on Thursday August 5th, The Nyinkka Nyunyu Cultural Centre in Tennant Creek on August 7th and another show in Alice at the Bloomin Deserts café and nursery on the evening of Friday August 13th.

Your Say:

I’m thrilled to know that Neil will be back in Alice in August.  We loved the show at Olive Pink, even in the cold, and look forward to hearing him at the Blooming Desert.  Cheers, Margaret Opie

Melbourne Writers' Festival
- Iconic Songs

Where: BMW Edge, Federation Square
Panelists: Archie Roach, Shane Howard, Neil Murray
Topic: My Island Home', 'Took the Children Away' and 'Solid Rock' are some of the most iconic Indigenous songs of our time. In an absolutely unmissable festival session, singers Archie Roach, Neil Murray and Shane Howard describe the amazing process of committing these songs to a series of newly published books, featuring artwork from the late Ruby Hunter, with the support of the Ian Thorpe Foundation. All three musicians will perform, describe their experiences and – should there be any doubt – underline the massive cultural significance of the iconic songs they share.
